Sustaining the global biodata infrastructure is a critical and growing challenge that requires urgent and cooperative action.
The Global Biodata Coalition has developed this White Paper as a step to meet this challenge of biodata sustainability. It identifies the key areas where research funders need to work with biodata resources and wider stakeholder communities to build solutions.
GBC will use the White Paper to stimulate discussion and catalyse action at national, regional and global levels.

How we developed the White Paper
The GBC’s Board of Funders established a cross-funder Working Group on Sustainability with expert representatives from GBC Member and Observer organisations in early 2022.
A consultation paper was developed based on the Working Group’s discussions setting out a series of options for cross-funder cooperation to enhance biodata resource sustainability, including a series of principles and illustrative models, Extensive feedback on the paper was gained via discussions with GBC’s Board, Scientific Advisory Committee and GCBR Forum, and through an open community consultation that ran from October 2023 to January 2024.
The White Paper was developed based on the ideas set out in the consultation paper and the invaluable feedback received. For further information on the community consultation, please see the supplementary document on Zenodo.
