Aim 1
To be a forum of funders of biodata resources enabling better coordination and sharing of approaches and strategies for efficient management and growth of this infrastructure.
Aim 2
To stabilise and ensure sustainable financial support for the global biodata infrastructure, with a focus on an identified and prioritised set of Global Core Biodata Resources that are crucial for sustaining the broader infrastructure.
Global Biodata Coalition Strategy 2026-2030
In 2026, GBC launched a new and accelerated strategy to respond to rapidly increasing pressure on the biodata ecosystem from fragmented funding models, insufficient co-ordinated long-term infrastructure support, rapidly advancing data science methods, such as AI and risk of reduced trust in globally shared open data relating to global inequity.
Vision
A stable and coordinated global biodata infrastructure meeting user needs.
Our strategic goals are:
Develop adaptive governance
Modernise governance to accommodate organisational growth and greater global participation.
Engage a more diverse community of funders
Expand membership geographically and across sectors, including industry and philanthropy.
Build a stronger biodata resource community
Strengthen Global Core Biodata Resources while engaging the wider biodata ecosystem.
Deliver practical sustainability solutions
Move beyond discussion by piloting and evaluating innovative sustainability models.
Five strategic initiatives
1. Refresh governance
The governance structure will evolve to become more agile, representative and scalable.
2. Engage a diverse funder community
A major priority is expanding beyond the current membership.
3. Refresh the GBC narrative and increase visibility
GBC plans to develop a concise and compelling value proposition.
4. Engage Biodata Providers
Beyond funders, the strategy seeks stronger engagement with resource providers.
5. Pilot Sustainability Approaches
GBC intends to commit to practical evaluations of sustainability models.
